About the Course

Databases forms the backbone of all major applications today. The Course aims to develop and manage efficient and effective database applications that requires understanding the fundamentals of database management systems, techniques for the design of databases, and principles of database administration.

More specifically, course introduces Entity-Relationship modeling, Relational data models,how to use the SQL queries to fetch, insert, delete, update data in a Database, Data Normalization, and Concurrency Control.

Further it introduces the Data mining and data warehousing concepts..

Syllabus

Introduction of database systems - Data modeling using Entity Relationship Model - Extended ER features - The Relational Model - Relational Query Languages.

Introduction to SQL - Intermediate SQL - Advanced SQL - Database Design - Functional Dependencies - Foundations of Database Transaction Processing - Concurrency Control in databases - Overview of Data Mining and Data Warehousing Concepts.

Expected Outcome:

The Students will

    1. Understand the fundamentals of relational, object oriented and distributed database systems including: data models, database architectures, and database manipulations.
    2. Understand the theories and techniques in developing database applications and be able to demonstrate the ability to build databases.

Intended Audience

Students from third Semester of MCA programme of Kerala Technological University

Pre-Requistes

    1. Knowledge in Procedural and/or Object Oriented Programming
    2. Knowledge in Algorithms

Instructor Bio

Deepa Mary Mathews

Ms. Deepa Mary Mathews had her post graduation in Computer Applications (MCA) from Madurai Kamaraj University, and gained second post graduation in M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from Dr M G R Educational and Research Institute, in the year 2006. She is currently pursuing Ph.D in Mahatma Gandhi University and her research area includes Data Mining, Social Data Analytics and Machine Learning. She has published 11 research papers in the International Journals, National and International Conferences including IEEE and Springer. She has over 14 years of teaching experience and has been associated with FISAT since the inception of the Department of Computer Applications in FISAT. Her earlier teaching was at St. Xavier’s College for Women, Aluva. Over a period of time, she has taught various subjects including Data Mining and Warehousing, Web Data Mining, Big Data Analytics, Digital Fundamentals, Linux and Shell Programming, Programming in C, Digital System and Computer Hardware, Computer Organization and Architecture, Microprocessors And Embedded Systems, Database Management Systems, Data Structures and Internet Technology And Distributed Applications
